Jesus: Our Sacrificial Lamb

St. John 3:16

Intro: The Trinity [also known as The Godhead] Father, Son and Holy Ghost typically used interchangeably especially God and Jesus:

The Trinity expressed mathematically is not 1+1+1= 3; it is 1x1x1=1

I.                    National Day of Atonement

Atonement- make amends for wrong doing; reconciliation with God.

[The ceremony was organized and performed once a year]

In the OT (Old Testament) prior to Jesus coming, God required shedding of blood [sacrifice] for remission [pardon/forgiveness] of sins.

II.                  Jesus Sacrifice

Q: How can Jesus one life be the substitute of so many lives that God still offers salvation to whosoever will?

A: Through Jesus, God used the perfect vehicle of expression- He translated deity into humanity; as John puts it, the Word was made flesh.  Jesus gave an infinite life and shed infinite blood which can satisfy the need of any number of finite lives:

  1. a) We are finite- limited to space, time, circumstances and the laws of nature. God is in-finite {infinite} He has no limitations.
  2. b) We express ourselves in 3 tenses of time- I was, I am and I will be. God expresses Himself in the eternal present I AM, I AM, I AM.

In the OT, whenever they sacrificed [killed] a lamb or animal, it was for that purpose and that people at that time {Good for one time only}.  When the time came to offer another sacrifice, they had to repeat the process all over again.

When Jesus shed his infinite blood it was forever.  His blood is infinite.  Because it’s infinite, it has as much cleansing [sin forgiving] power today, as it did when He shed it on Calvary.

Because Jesus sacrifice was so great, God set it up so that no man can get to Him except they go through Jesus- St. John 14:6.

III.                We Are Living Sacrifices

Romans 12:1-2 KJV: I beseech [plead with]you therefore brethren by the mercies of God that ye present [offer] your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service [bare minimum expectation].

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Conformed vs. Transformed

Conformed- prefix “co” means to be in harmony and agreement with; alike.  Prefix “con” is condone; connect.  Form- external appearance of a clearly defined area.

Transformed- prefix “trans” means to change from; transition to.  Form- external appearance of a clearly defined area.

[Jesus was sacrificed for our transformation]

The blood Jesus shed was so precious, Jesus would not allow Mary to touch Him after His resurrection St. John 20:15-19. Note: a closed door won’t stop Jesus from stepping in.

Romans 8:13 NIV 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

Living according to the flesh means to do whatever you “feel” like doing without restraint.  Living by the spirit means to live according to Godly principles spelled out in His word.

IV.                Conclusion

Jesus is our high priest; our salvation [deliverance] is through Him.  We can go to Him in confidence with anything and for anything.

Because of the blood Jesus shed at Calvary, every day is a day of Atonement– repent daily; ask God for mercy daily.  Jesus is our sacrificial lamb.

We are the living sacrifices.  Our altar is wherever we set it up i.e. bedside, living room, driver’s seat, church pew, church altar etc.
